The company down the street

Why the other company shows up first on Google Maps

They may be closer, better matched to the search, better known, or simply more consistent. Compare the full picture before copying one visible tactic.

Ask about my listing

The direct answer

Google does not rank listings by review count alone.

Google describes local results through relevance, distance, and prominence. The profile above yours may use a more accurate primary category, sit closer to the searcher, earn steadier reviews, have stronger real-world recognition, or connect to a website that explains the service better.

Run the comparison from several points in the service area. One search from your office cannot show how customers across town see the market.

Compare the parts you can verify

Build a small worksheet for your business and the companies that repeatedly appear above it. Record facts rather than guesses.

  • Primary and secondary categories
  • Review count, recency, and owner responses
  • Services, hours, photos, and profile completeness
  • Website pages supporting the searched service
  • Consistent business information across trusted directories
  • Visibility at several points across the service area

Fix the boring gaps first

Correct the category, hours, phone, services, ownership, and website connection before chasing a clever trick. Ask for reviews after completed jobs and keep adding current work. These jobs compound because they also make the listing easier for a customer to trust.

Don’t copy obvious spam

A competitor may stuff a city into its name, use a lead-generation address, buy reviews, or create extra listings. Those tactics can work temporarily and still violate Google’s rules. Document clear violations and report them through the proper channel; keep your own profile defensible.

Call or text (509) 557-0797 if your situation doesn’t fit these answers.

Do more reviews always mean a higher rank?+

No. Reviews matter, but Google also considers relevance, distance, and prominence. A closer or better-matched business can outrank one with more reviews.

Can I add keywords to my business name?+

Use the real-world business name. Adding services or cities only for rankings can lead to edits or suspension.

Why do rankings change by neighborhood?+

Distance from the searcher changes the local result. A business may appear near its base and disappear across town even for the same words.

Should I report a competitor using a fake name or address?+

Report clear guideline violations with evidence. Don’t file speculative reports or copy the tactic on your own profile.
