Google Maps diagnosis

Why your business isn’t showing up on Google Maps

First work out whether the listing is missing, buried, suspended, or only visible when someone searches your exact name. Each problem has a different fix.

Ask about my listing

The direct answer

“Not showing up” describes four different problems.

Your listing may be absent from Maps, disabled by Google, hidden behind stronger nearby competitors, or visible only for your business name. Search once for the exact name and once for the main service from a place where customers actually live. Then check the Business Profile account for warnings.

Don’t change the business name, create another profile, or stuff the service area with cities before you know which problem you have. Those moves can make ownership and verification harder.

Missing or unclaimed

Search the exact business name, phone number, and address. If the real profile exists, request access to it instead of creating a new one. If it truly does not exist, create one with the real business name and the correct storefront or service-area setup.

  • Use a Google account controlled by the business owner
  • Choose the category that best describes the main work
  • Hide a home address if customers do not visit it
  • Complete the verification method Google offers

Suspended or disabled

Open the profile manager and read the notice. Compare the name, address, service-area setup, and business model with Google’s representation rules. Correct the underlying issue, gather proof, and use the appeal path. Repeating the same appeal without fixing the problem wastes time.

Verified, but buried

A live profile can rank well beside the shop and disappear a few miles away. Check it across the service area, then compare the categories, reviews, business information, website, and real-world prominence of businesses that appear above you.

  • Primary category matches the core service
  • Recent reviews arrive at a natural pace
  • Services and hours stay accurate
  • Website clearly supports the listing
  • Old or duplicate information gets corrected

Why can I find my business by name but not by service?+

A name search tells Google exactly which business to find. A service search compares you with nearby competitors using relevance, distance, and prominence, so a verified listing can still be buried for “plumber near me.”

Should I make a second listing?+

No. A second profile can split reviews and create a duplicate. Find the real listing and fix its ownership, verification, suspension, or information problem.

Does adding more cities to my service area make me rank there?+

No. The service-area setting tells customers where you work, but it does not create a ranking in every city you add.

Can anyone guarantee I will show in the top three?+

No. Google controls local results, and results change with the searcher’s location and market conditions.
